Summer Landscape in Pastel with Pat Tribastone, PSA Master

In this class we will learn to paint the summer landscape in pastel from fundamental drawing to finished painting. We will learn about the essential elements of all landscape paintings including values, perspective, composition and color as well as techniques for handling the pastel medium. All materials are provided. All levels.

Memorial Art Gallery Creative Workshop Painting with Pastels

This class focuses on color. We’ll learn effective and fun ways to draw with hard or soft pastels. You can try techniques, see demonstrations, and get help troubleshooting your art. Best for students with some drawing experience.

Learn how to draw figures, and how to make expressive drawings by participating in this 2-day intense workshop with Mashiul. Students will have the opportunity to learn from short dynamic gestural poses to long poses of a life model.

"Painting Lyrical Water"
September 13-15, 2024
Learn to paint exuberant, lively water so that the viewer can feel the light and hear the sounds! Featuring moving water as the primary subject matter, Barbara will present and demonstrate her approach to landscape painting. Skills covered include composition (especially pertaining to showcasing water in a painting), editing, value structure, color temperature, chroma, and edges. Emphasis will be on capturing brilliant light effects for moving water subjects such as waterfalls and rapids. Students can paint in either oil or pastel. Barbara will demonstrate both. Demonstrations will be in the morning, and students will paint in the afternoon with plenty of individual instruction. Open to all levels, although artists with at least some basic landscape painting experience will benefit most.

"Impressionist Painting with Pastels"
September 24-26, 2024
Learn how to work with the vibrancy of soft pastels. The class will start with a full painting demonstration. Carol will share her process for blocking in large simple shapes before layering colors. You will learn how to focus on a strong composition, define values, identify your light source, establish a point of focus, and how to see and use color effectively in your paintings. You will learn how to interpret your reference photographs and understand the relationships between value, color temperature and color intensity. There will be personalized teaching and individualized feedback throughout the day.

"Colors & Textures in The Pastel Landscape"
October 11-13, 2024
This workshop will elevate your artistic journey with successful strategies for creating painterly landscapes. 10 steps for success will be accentuated. Eve will demonstrate how to choose effective reference photos while activating your scene using underpainting techniques. She will do two demos per day utilizing different techniques. You will learn how to choose dynamic compositions using thumbnails, 3 to 5 simple shapes, values and edges. We will cover harmony, tips for loosening your painting style, art apps for success, as well as many tips and tools. A constructive and encouraging appraisal will wrap up our workshop!

"Painting the Poetic Landscape"
June 1-5, 2025
Barbara offers workshops in pastel or oil, or both, focusing on landscapes. Her workshops are primarily in the studio, but she may occasionally offer a plein air portion to a workshop if requested. All demos are in the studio. Her teaching style includes daily demonstrations, during which she talks through each step and allows questions. She provides exercises that have very specific objectives so that students are able to see achievable results and she offers plenty of individual assistance at the easel. Barbara holds Signature Memberships in Oil Painters of America and American Impressionist Society, is a Master Pastelist with the Pastel Society of America, and an Eminent Pastelist with the International Association of Pastel Societies.
